The five unique areas of Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland border the two main rivers the Tyne and the Wear, where the region derived its name. Tyne and Wear is home to 43% of the North East’s population with 1.08 million people living there.
Tyne and Wear is made up of five metropolitan boroughs:
